Examples of Available Technology
Kids and Car Safety believes the solution to these preventable tragedies is a combination of education and technology. Kids and Car Safety would like all vehicles to come equipped with a system that would detect occupants and alert a driver if a child has been left in the vehicle. Learn more here
Technology should be installed during the manufacturing stage of ALL vehicles and be able to detect the presence of an occupant (child, pet, etc.). The ‘detection’ feature is necessary to address children who get into vehicles on their own, which accounts for 26% of hot car deaths. Systems utilize a wide range of detection features including sensors that detect motion, radar, lidar, carbon dioxide, etc.
A simple end-of-trip reminder to look in the back seat is outdated technology that would fail in a number of common scenarios and provide a false sense of protection for families. Many vehicles today have this simple reminder alert and consumers are confused thinking it detects a child in the back seat when it does not. Kids and Car Safety has already documented 4 children that have died in a vehicle with this reminder alert.
