Zac's Story
“I Didn’t See Him”: A Family’s Frontover Story
In this heartbreaking video, Ian Shipley and Esme Cruz of Kenosha, Wisconsin share the story of their son, Zac, a joyful little boy whose life was tragically cut short in a driveway frontover incident. Zac was inseparable from his sister—always laughing, always close by. On what was meant to be a normal Saturday morning, a familiar routine turned devastating in a matter of seconds. While pulling forward out of a garage, moving slowly and carefully, Ian did not see Zac in the vehicle’s front blindzone. The unthinkable happened. Ian and Esme’s story underscores a critical and often overlooked danger: limited visibility create deadly blindzones where children can disappear from view—even when parents are cautious and attentive. As vehicles continue to grow bigger and heavier, the risks in driveways and parking areas increase. Through Kids and Car Safety, Ian and Esme found support and a path forward—learning how to raise awareness about frontover risks, vehicle blindzones, and the importance of safety technology like cameras, automatic braking and improved vehicle design. Today, they speak out in Zac’s memory to help other families understand these dangers and to advocate for safer vehicles and environments for children. Frontover tragedies are preventable. Awareness, education, and safer vehicle design save lives.
