Power Windows

Jessie Adams

My 6-year-old daughter Jessie Adams had her neck rolled up in our electric window on October 18, 2017, and although I was able to free her without injury it was a very close call and could have turned out so differently.

When we pulled into our driveway I heard my 10 year-old daughter Emma scream, ” Mom Jessie’s head is caught in the window.” I got out of the car and I could not believe what I was seeing. Jessie’s face was red and she was making a noise as see she was struggling to breathe.

I jumped back into the car and started it and hit the window button to roll it down and the window would not roll back down. Thank God Emma was with me because she was able to follow my instructions as I pulled out on the window just enough to allow Jessie to somewhat breathe. I truly thought I was going to lose my baby.

We live out in the country and I knew it would take 10 to 15 minutes for an ambulance to reach us and I knew I did not have that kind of time. I could not leave the window because me pulling on it was the only thing giving her barely enough room to breathe.

I instructed my 10-year-old to call 911. There was a handle to a car jack lying nearby and I had my Emma bring it to me. At first I tried hitting the glass to break it and it was like hitting plastic and it was not budging. As Emma was talking to the 911 operator I stuck the handle in between the glass and door frame and pulled with everything I had in me and was able to pop the glass and it shattered. I grabbed my baby in my arms searching for any injuries and shaking like I had never shaken before. This could have turned out so differently.

She could have been cut by the glass, broken her little neck, or strangled to death, and the list goes on and on. I am such a careful and safe mom but this CAN happen to anyone and I am appalled that the car manufacturers have the technology and could easily remedy this and do not seem to care to make our children safer.
