Virginia’s and Curtis’ Story

Virginia and Curtis were inseparable. If one was getting in trouble, the other one was right there getting in trouble too. They were always happy, flashing toothy grins at everyone they saw. Curtis was developing an interest in fishing and was already a country singer superstar. Virginia was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty. She was 4 going on 18.

June 15, 2009 is a day I will never forget, the day that changed our lives forever.

Virginia was only 4 years old and Curtis was 5. They had gone outside to a neighbor’s house to play, where they were to wait for the bus to pick them up for Vacation Bible School.

When the bus arrived and the kids were not there, the little girl from across the street came over, asking for them. I thought they had been with her, but she said that they were not with her.

My heart stopped.

It had been about 30 minutes since I last saw my children. The police were called and the search began. Police and neighbors searched the neighborhood; they went door to door for just over 30 minutes.

That’s when I heard my mother scream. I was a few streets away looking for them when I saw a crowd gathering behind my vehicle. My mother found them holding hands, locked inside the trunk of our 2000 Chevy Malibu. They had climbed into the trunk and were unable to escape. By the time my mother found them, it was too late.

We’ll never forget the little fingers that mischievously painted the “”murals”” on our living room walls. Both their father and I lived, breathed and died for those kids.

Virginia and Curtis, you are loved and missed dearly every single day.
