Benjamin Thompson’s Story
November 5, 2009 – September 10, 2012

My name is Katherine Thompson and I would like to tell you a story about a little boy named Benjamin Kyle Thompson. My husband Billy and I have been married for almost 9 years now. We both had children before we married but we always wanted another son together.

We prayed for a child for 3 years and in 2009 God blessed us. November 5, 2009 we were blessed with this beautiful baby boy. He was different from the start. His smile and laugh were contagious. He had the most beautiful blue eyes you’ve ever seen. All the rest of our children were all at least 10 years older than him, so he was everyone’s baby. Our lives existed just for Benjamin.

Benjamin had his own playground outside. In fact, we had just spent $10,000 on a new fence around our 1 acre property just to protect him. His Dad was one of those Dad’s that would have to go check his window every night in his room while he slept just to make sure it was locked so no nothing would happen to him. Who would’ve ever thought he would be stuck with the memory of the one that ended it all. He loves Benjamin more than just about anyone and everyone loved that baby.

Benjamin’s favorite was the trampoline. I have an awesome video of him on it just weeks before he passed. You would’ve never known he wasn’t even 3 yet. All our kids used to jump on there with him. He was always such a happy child.

September 10, 2012… Our day started just like any other day.

Billy, Benjamin and I had just gotten home from going grocery shopping and unloaded the car. Billy went over to the truck to hook up the trailer to a log they had just cut down from the front yard. At that point Benjamin was jumping on the trampoline in the front yard. When he got down our puppy was messing with him and he was getting aggravated so Benjamin came over by me to help me clean out the Expedition. I handed him his Gameboy and said, “Here you go Bubba, take this upstairs.”

Last thing he said was, “Okay Mommy!” 45 seconds later his head was under the tire of our F150. My husband yelled out, “Oh my God honey where’s Bubba?”

I turned my headed and began to scream. The truck had stopped on his skull. My husband jumped out and literally threw the truck across the driveway and off our son. But it was too late.

When the truck was off of him I did the only thing I could do. I jumped on top of him and put my lips on his smashed head. I was trying to put his brains back in his head. Time stood still at this point. All I remember was screaming and hearing my husband screaming in the background. You can’t explain it. It’s a soul wrenching scream that can only come when you lose part of your soul.

We had our own business and our workers still have nightmares about that day. My husband still has deep routed struggles from being the one behind the wheel.

It’s been just over a year since we lost this precious gift and our lives will never be the same. We still wake up every day waiting for Benjamin to run into the room and scream, “Good morning Mommy! Good morning Daddy!”

If my husband would have had a back-up camera on his truck, he would have been able to see Benjamin behind his truck as he backed up and our son would still be with us. Benjamin was our everything. He was our sunshine and our reason for getting up in the morning.

Below are just a few more things that I wanted to share with you about how wonderful our little Benjamin was….
Since before he was born, we always gave God all the Glory for his entire existence. He first attended church when he was 3 days old. He first learned how to crawl on the alter steps of our church every Sunday. Benjamin and I had church every night at bedtime. We had a routine every night. He is the only child I’ve ever known that could sing all the words to “How Great is Our God” by Chris Tomlin in all 8 languages. I couldn’t even do it.

I remember when we were trying to pick the perfect name for him. My husband loved the name Kyle and I knew that would have to be one of the names. But I felt in my heart that I had to give him a biblical name. I felt I owed Him that. Benjamin was the leader of the 12th tribe and he was a powerful man of God. When he was born I knew we made the right decision.

He loved Sponge Bob for the first 1 1/2 years of his life but as he got older he loved Handy Manny and Dora, because he loved Boots. He could already speak Spanish because of them. It was so adorable to watch him. Bath time was one of my favorites too. Every day when he would get out of the tub we had this thing we would do when he got out. We would look in the mirror and say,”” 123 CHEEEEESSEEE!!!”” And smile real big. Every day…… Almost every mirror for that matter. lol

After my daughter gave birth to our grandson, Christopher, it was a huge adjustment. We were afraid Benjamin would be jealous of him. But he loved that baby so much. He would get up every morning and run to the front of the house, walk up to the baby’s cradle, he would kiss his forehead and say,”” Good morning Baby!””

Benjamin’s brother, Brandon, has Aspurgers, ADHD and bipolar disorder. He didn’t have many friends but Benjamin loved him unconditionally. He was his best friend for sure. Brandon was 13 when Benjamin passed. Since he left, Brandon has gone through severe depression. Brandon was in the shower when it happened. He always swore he would protect Benjamin with his life and he still has moments when he blames himself. He suffers from severe PTSD after he came outside and saw his brother before the paramedics arrived. It would be a hard thing for any child to come outside and see his mother laying on top of his brother screaming, but for a child with disabilities, it’s different.

Thank you for listening… please make sure the vehicles you drive have a back-up camera so you can see what is behind you when backing up. Every vehicle has a large and very dangerous blindzone behind it (and in front of it) where the driver cannot see a child.
