We are happy to report that our efforts are being noticed!! Below is an outline of some of the media coverage we have received to-date about this important safety issue. We encourage everyone interested in this issue to do whatever they can to help us get trunk releases inside car trunks.

  • On February 14, 1997, letters were sent to all of the United States automobile manufacturer's headquarters.

  • We wrote a second letter in November of 1997 to update the automobile manufacturers about our progress and our research.

Television coverage

  • Extra! TV show has a page on their site about the "Trapped in the Trunk of a Car" segment they aired 2-16-2000.

  • The Oprah Show recently aired a segment featuring TRUNC members talking about their experiences.

  • The Leeza Show featured the trunk entrapment issue in their "From Crisis to Crusader" program that aired on August 2, 1999. An actual demonstration of the Ford Motor Company's inside trunk release that is standard equipment was featured using a model year 2000 vehicle.

  • Court TV interviewed the Fennell family for their live "Pros and Cons" program on January 4, 2000.

  • Dateline NBC aired a story on the trunk release issue ("Open and Shut Case") on December 8, 1997 with an interview with Janette Fennell and other victims of trunk entrapment.

    Dateline NBC updated the trunk entrapment segment and aired it again on March 24, 1999, as part of their program entitled "No Way Out."

    The "No Way Out" program was also run on the Discovery Channel.

  • "American Journal" aired a story about what happened to the Fennell family on November 1, 1995 and on Christmas Eve because it was a story that had a happy ending.

  • "The Montel Williams" show aired an episode about people that have survived a kidnapping. Members of the TRUNC organization were featured in the show that aired on January 20 and June 23, 1997.

  • "American Journal" ran a segment about the inside trunk release issue on November 7, 1997.

Magazines

  • REDBOOK Magazine featured an article entitled "A Terrifying Crime Made Me a Crusader" in the February 2000 issue. Janette Fennell narrowly escaped death after being locked in a car trunk. Now she's working to improvethe odds for others. By Melanie Rehak

  • Reader's Digest ran an article in their Regular Features section, "Heroes for Today" about the efforts of Janette Fennell in October 1999.

  • People Magazine featured an article in their "Activists" section entitled "Escaped Crusader." After being locked in her car's trunk by robbers, Janette Fennell leads the campaign for emergency inside release latches. Megan McCaslin in Marin County and Macon Morehouse in Washington, D.C. wrote the article.

  • "Good Housekeeping" magazine-November, 1997: A very well written article was featured in "The Better Way" section. The article was entitled "Car Crime Safety Alert."

Talk Radio shows

  • Radio Free Lenawee 97.7FM, February 15, 1997. A Radio Talk show that airs in the Detroit, MI marketplace.
  • WXYT-AM 1270, April 19 and June 28, 1997. "Let's Talk Cars." A Radio Talk show that airs in the Detroit, MI marketplace.
