Trunk Releases Urgently Needed Coalition

HOW TO submit comments on the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Interior Trunk Releases (Docket No. NHTSA 99-5063;Notice 1)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” that will make it mandatory for all new vehicles in the United States to be equipped with a trunk release inside the trunk by January 1, 2001. We are currently in the 60-day comment period that ends February 15, 2000. You can write to NHTSA and express your opinion about the trunk entrapment issue.

This is a surprisingly simple, but incredibly important thing to do.

NOW is the time to let your voice be heard. You have an opportunity for your comments to become part of the “Official record” on the issue of trunk entrapment. You can comment online by following the following steps.

Go to: http://dms.dot.gov/search

  1. This will take you to the “Search” page for dockets. The second (#2) search choice is to find a docket by entering the Docket Number. The docket number for Trunk Entrapments is 5063.
  2. After entering 5063, click on search. This will take you directly to the “Docket Summary Information” page regarding Trunk Entrapments.
  3. To make your comments via the Internet, click on “submit.” This will bring you to a screen that asks if you would like register yourself or make comments as an “Unregistered User Submission.” I would suggest you comment as “Unregistered” unless you do allot of commenting on different Federal issues. This will simply save you time.
  4. You will be asked to fill out a form that includes your name, address, etc. The information fields you might not know how to fill-out are the following.
    Docket ID: 5063
    Docket Type: Regulatory
Document Title: Notice of proposed rulemaking
Operating Administration: (pull down menu) NHTSA
    Docket Existence: Does Exist
Confidential: Your choice- I would suggest “no”
Submission Method: You can enter a comment directly on the page or
Attach a file. (your choice, whatever is easier)
  5. After all of the information is filled out, click on “Submit”*** That will take you to a screen where you can enter your comments or attach a file.
  6. When you click on “submit” this time, your comments are sent.

Please encourage as many people as possible to write to NHTSA regarding this pending rule. If all goes well, every automaker will have to install inside trunk releases in their vehicles by January 1, 2001. (which means most models will have them by September 2000) J

NHTSA also has a “hotline” that deals with computer support. (800) 647-5527
